The elephant died on January 7 2017.

លោកតាដំរីអាយុ១០០ឆ្នាំ នៅស្រុកជុំគីរី សូមលាបងប្អូនទៅទីដ៏ស្ងប់ស្ងាត់តែត្រឹមនេះហើយ។ ប្រជាពលរដ្ឋអ្នកស្រុក ក៏បានរៀបចំបញ្ចុះ និងរៀបចំពិធីសាសនាជូនលោកតាដំរីផងដែរ។

Amazing, I didn't realize there were such elaborate funerals for elephants.

Influenced by Hinduism where the elephant is a sacred animal and is considered the representation or the living incarnation of Ganesh, the elephant-headed god?

In the Khmer article (OP) they also refer to the elephant as "Look Taa Domrey", a title expressing a higher status.

On the other hand, the article below says:

អ្វីដែលគេកម្របានឃើញពីមុននោះគឺការបញ្ចុះសពដំរីដែលមានវ័យដ៍ច្រើនអស្ចារ្យនេះ តែម្តង។
