That old fossil of a King has been barely clinging to life for so many years. The ceremonies after his death will be quite an impressive spectacle to see...something Thailand hasn't seen for 70 years and will probably never see again in this magnitude. The crown price is a right wanker and widely loathed by the Thai people and Red Shirt/Yellow Shirt chaos would explode if it weren't for the junta's extremely harsh crackdown on press and personal freedoms.
I absolutely love the place, but the political future is quite cloudy for the majority rural poor. Tourism though, will continue mostly unabated. It is just too wonderful a place with awesome weather to keep people away no matter what the political situation in the countryside. And the Chinese hordes have only just begun to travel internationally.
Prayuth cancels gov events; Thai stocks fall by 6,8%.
